An 18-year-old man was killed and another teen injured after a car rolled and slammed into a building in Southland this morning.

Sergeant Ian Martin of Invercargill police said the driver lost control on Park St in Winton, about 35km north of Invercargill, before the car rolled and crashed into a building on the corner of Mary St about 5.30am.

An 18-year-old local man died at the scene while a 17-year-old was taken to Southland Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

It was not yet known which man was driving or whether they were wearing seat belts.

Mr Martin said the grey Ford Falcon car was believed to have been travelling at excessive speed in the 50km/h area before the crash.

The road remains closed while police and the Southland serious crash investigator examine the scene.

The car would later be taken to secure storage for further examination.

Police called for anyone who saw the vehicle before the crash to get in touch.

The crash comes after two men were killed in separate motorcycle crashes yesterday.

One man was killed when his motorcycle and a car collided south of Carterton, Wairarapa, while a second man was killed when his bike slammed into a wall in Napier.
