A young woman was killed and a small baby suffered moderate injuries in a single car crash near Napier today.
The car had veered off State Highway 50, between Hastings and Napier, and ended up in a ditch about midday, Inspector Marty Edghill of central police communications said.
A woman in her early to mid 20s died and a small baby was injured, he told NZPA.
There was no one else in the car and no other vehicles involved in the crash.
The road would be closed for some time, Mr Edghill said. Diversions were in place.
It was not yet clear what had caused the crash, but the police serious crash unit was investigating, he said.
The baby had been transported to hospital in a moderate condition, St John central communications team leader Anita Halbert said.
