A 17-year-old girl was allegedly dragged into a park and assaulted by a man before breaking free and fleeing in Christchurch on Saturday night.

About 9.20pm the teenager was walking along Greers Road in Burnside when she was accosted by a man and dragged into a park at the rear of Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre, police said.

The man was described as Maori or Polynesian, aged 18 to 30 years.

Police would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time.
