A man has died in hospital overnight from injuries sustained in a major crash near Nelson yesterday.
Police said the crash between a car and a truck and trailer happened at an intersection on Moutere Highway around 3:40pm.
The truck was travelling south on the highway when the car - a late model Mercedes Benz - failed to give way, police said.
A passenger in the car, believed to be a local resident in his late 30s, died in Nelson Hospital overnight.
Its driver was flown to Wellington Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.
The truck driver was shaken but uninjured by the collision, police said.
He was breath tested at the crash site and returned a negative result.
Serious crash investigators are still working at the scene.
