Jeff Pelesa Sanft, 32, was travelling on a bus in Christchurch's city centre when the earthquake struck.
He died in hospital after being injured when the bus was crushed by falling debris.
Following his death, Jeff's family and friends paid tribute to their brother and friend, who grew up in Christchurch and was well known in rugby league circles.
Brother Laki Sanft said on his Facebook page: "Still speechless. G, I miss you so bad!"
Many friends conveyed their shock at learning of Jeff's death, with one woman saying she had seen him walking through town minutes before the earthquake.
Most of Jeff's photos show a smiling little girl - his daughter.
One friend wrote: "All our love to the Sanft aiga [family]. He will eternally be in our hearts. R.I.P uso [brother]."
Another reads: "You will forever be in our hearts, cherished and loved. Until we meet again our cuzzie."
