New legislation imposing tougher penalties for animal cruelty has been passed into law.
MPs have voted unanimously to support a bill that could see maximum fines increased to $75,000 for individuals and up to $350,000 for corporate organisations. Maximum jail terms will be increased from three to five years.
The legislation was originally a Member's Bill from National MP Simon Bridges, but was adopted as a Government Bill.
