Railway lines near an Auckland train station have been closed after the discovery of a person's body early today, police said.

Police and ambulance staff were called to Takanini train station, about 30km south of downtown Auckland, and they found a body close to the tracks, about 5am.

The line has been closed and passengers travelling both north and south were told to expect delays.

Police said they were working to confirm the person's identity and investigating the cause of death.
