The Government says New Zealanders are to be given priority for jobs during the recession.
Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman says it is unlikely temporary work visas will be issued or renewed as the Government will put New Zealand workers first.
Prime Minister John Key is not expecting similar changes to the Skilled Migrants visa category, but says it very important to see people put to work so they are not unemployed. He says if New Zealanders have the skills required to do a job, then that would be the first port of call.
Mr Key says there is still a skills shortage in New Zealand that needs to be addressed.
