Head-on crash kills 1, injures 3

By Alice Neville

One man is dead and three others are seriously injured after a high-powered car crossed the centre-line while overtaking and collided with an oncoming vehicle late yesterday afternoon.

The dead man was a front-seat passenger in a Honda station wagon that hit a BMW on a bend near the intersection of State Highway 22 and Jesmond Rd in Drury, south of Auckland, about 4pm.

The male driver of the Honda and another male passenger were taken to Middlemore Hospital. Both are in a serious condition.

The male driver of the Papakura-bound BMW, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also taken to Middlemore and his condition is moderate.

Senior Sergeant Shawn Rutene of the Counties Manukau Serious Crash Unit said the police were seeking a motorcyclist who is thought to have witnessed the crash.

The stretch of road where the crash occurred is an accident blackspot.
