Up to 80 fire fighters and 20 fire engines have contained a large blaze in the Queen Street Burger King in Auckland.

Herald reporter Bec Vass, who was at the scene, says the blaze was caused by a fire in the Burger King kitchen.

The fire has now been doused and the fire fighters are laying sand on surrounding areas.

Earlier, fire fighters used a cherry picker and a ladder to fight the blaze.

Retail assistant Megan Vettoretti told NZPA lower Queen St had been enveloped in smoke.

"The whole road is smokey, there are ladders and stuff going up," she said from nearby Bivouac Outdoor.

"It smells like burger beef in our store, even though we're halfway up the street in a dungeon."

Smoke could be seen from across the city.

The neighbouring 28 storey Tower building was evacuated along with other surrounding buildings which had become smoke logged.

An office fire warden told nzherald.co.nz that smoke from Burger King had entered the building and set off the smoke detectors.

Queen Street has been closed from Wyndam Street at the top end and Custom Street at the lower end.

The fire was witnessed by a large crowd of onlookers.

There has been no report of any serious injuries in the fire.
