The National Party is backing a move to ban gang patches in Wanganui.
It follows the results of a local referendum, which shows the majority of residents who voted want to see an end to gang insignia being displayed in public.
Wanganui MP Chester Borrows says he is planning to present a bill to Parliament in May.
He says a lot of other district councils around the country will be looking on to see how it flies.
Mr Borrows says it has every likelihood of passing into law.
If the bill is passed, it will be the first of its kind in New Zealand.
He says it shows most people have had enough of intimidating gang members.
Chester Borrows says Rotorua is one city that has already expressed an interest.
