A police dog stabbed in an incident near Whangarei has returned home today.

The dog, known as Gus, sustained a punctured lung during a struggle with a man armed with a knife in the early hours of last Thursday, October 3.

He had tracked the man through rough terrain during an armed offenders squad callout with his handler. Police said at the time that the dog had protected his handler during the struggle.

Gus was flown to Auckland for emergency veterinary treatment. He did not undergo surgery, but has been hooked up to an apparatus to help him breathe while his lung repairs.

He is now doing well police said today. His handler, who has not been named, also wanted to thank members of the public and his colleagues for the messages of support.
