Was she just tired or was that a subtle American accent people noticed whenever Lorde appeared on stage at the music awards last night?
Lorde won two Tuis at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, picking up Single of the Year for her Hunger Games soundtrack song Yellow Flicker Beat and the International Achievement Award.
During her acceptance speeches, the Kiwi pop star admitted she'd just stepped off a plane from New York and was suffering extreme jetlag.
"Can I just say it's incredibly lovely to be back," Lorde said while accepting the Tui for Single of the Year.
"I was just in New York the morning before yesterday and I'm super jetlagged but it's so nice to be back and see you all and walk the red carpet and see all those familiar faces," she said.
But perhaps all that time spent abroad is finally influencing her accent, with many fans noticing an American inflection sneaking into her voice.
During one of her speeches, Lorde joked that the awards should have given her some "chill time" after she swept many of the biggest categories last year.
And she told fans she was working hard on her next album.
"I know a lot of people are waiting for another Lorde record and I promise you it's coming," she said.
She also told the story how when was was curating the Hunger Games soundtrack on which Yellow Flicker Beat appeared, her phone would pop up with reminders to "ring Grace Jones" and "ring Kanye".
"If you know me, I'm kind of shy. They were not easy calls to make," she joked.
