Melbourne Storm player and former Hawthorn AFL player Shem Tatupu is recovering in hospital after being struck by a car on Monday night.
The former AFL rookie was hit while crossing the road on Olympic Boulevard, outside AAMI Park, after completing a training session.
Players and staff were at the scene and immediately called an ambulance.
The taxi screeched to a halt and the driver got out to help the injured man while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Police are investigating but do not believe the 28-year-old driver was at fault.
The New Zealander has been cleared of any serious injury.
The club last night thanked members of the public who were in the area at the time and came to the assistance of players and staff.
Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lisa Hind said the pedestrian was taken to The Alfred hospital suffering head injuries.
He remains in hospital in a stable condition and is expected to be discharged from hospital in the coming days.
