BRIDGE
Leona Campbell was so impressed with the care her late parents received from the local hospice, she organised a bridge tournament to fundraise for the local health organisation.
The idea caught on and eventually 56 players turned out to contest the Ena and Danny Jones Memorial, hosted by the Kaitaia Bridge Club on Church Road on February 8.
And the local card sharks certainly didn't come empty-handed, noted the Tokerau Beach woman when she proudly presented a cheque for $1590 to a most appreciative Lee Standing, the family support coordinator of Far North Palliative and Cancer Care Community Hospice, last Friday.
Leona said the main idea behind the event was to honour the memory of her parents, Ena and Danny Jones, who both passed away last year within six weeks of each other. The pair had been married for 66 years when Ena was taken by cancer and then joined six weeks later by Danny after he developed complications during a routine medical operation.
To honour their memory, a family friend designed a unique wooden trophy for the event which Leona also particularly wanted to use to fundraise for the local hospice as a way of thanking them the "wonderful care" they provided for her late mother and father.
The turnout on the day included visitors from Kerikeri and six from the UK and Canada, with Leona noting all 56 received a prize. There were also raffles run on the day, morning tea was provided by Anne Kitchen, and the food for a lavish lunch was donated by the Jones and Dawson families as well as Leona's closest friends.
"It really was a great day and the beautiful spread was enjoyed by all," she said, adding her heartfelt thanks to the kitchen workers including Marilyn Jones, Peter Davy, Myra Jones and Anita Harold: "They all did a marvellous job."
The director of bridge for the day was Alex McFie and scorer was Selwyn Hargreaves; and a full list of results feature below.
After all the prizes were given out, the Ena and Danny Jones Trophy was presented to the day's top scorers, Bill Potts and Clara Murray.
The Kaitaia Bridge Club plans to turn the Ena and Danny Jones Memorial into an annual event which will fundraise for other worthy local causes in the future.
