Trevor Smith with Jim Naylor, and Bunty Barron and Janice Allan took out the men's and women's titles respectively when the Cooper's Beach Bowling Club completed its domestic championship pairs titles over two days last weekend.
Both winners were victorious with their two lives intact, the results based on a two life system of 18 end or 1- hours with no time limit for the final/ possible final.
Seven combinations entered the men's event with Smith and Naylor eventually taking out the title 17-11 against Dennis Breckon and Peter Wilson. Ron Payne with second year bowler Steve Barber almost managed to topple the Breckon duo out of the final, being down 8-13 after 12 ends before finishing 13-14 at the end of the allowable time.
With nine combinations in the women's event Barron and Allan progressed to the second day with two lives alongside Pat Rayner/ Nancy Page. Bev Shand and junior bowler Trish McLaren took a life off the latter pair but were put out by Barron and partner in the next game, while Dawn King and Glennis Ansley ended the day for Rayner/ Page. The final was a never say die affair for King/ Ansley down 14-0 after six ends, 18-5 after 13 ends and the final score being 18-16.
In both events, a club report noted, many of the games were as close as one or two points the difference. A few nicknames came up over the weekend which won't be disclosed at this stage.
The club wished its winners all the best when they go forward to represent the club in the Bowls Far North champion of champion event in the New Year and also wished the wider bowling community a Merry Christmas and happy new year.
The next open tournament at Cooper's Beach is the Mary Reed open mixed triples on Saturday, December 29. This event is in mufti, so organisers advised entrants to bring along friends and family in the Far North on holiday to join in. For more information contact Brian Pickard 406-0803.
