Northland's Ciara Smith has enjoyed early success in the Australian Age Group Championships in Brisbane.
Smith, coached by Monica Cooper from the Northwave Swimming Club, finished second in the girls 16 years 100m breaststroke final last night in 1:10.70. Earlier she had easily won the preliminary qualifying race.
Former Northland swimmer Ellie Eastwood, who is now with the Auckland-based United Swimming Club, was fourth in 1:13.33. She also finished eighth in the 400m individual medley on Tuesday night.
Smith and Eastwood swim again tonight in the 200m breaststroke final, after qualifying second and fourth respectively in their preliminary.
Annabel Simpson swam the 16-year-old girls 100m backstroke on Tuesday, and was just outside the qualifying mark for the final with 1.04.95.
Simpson's time was 13th best out of 47 swimmers.
The 2017 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Championships features close to 1900 of Australia's outstanding young swimmers, plus the top echelon of New Zealand swimmers.
The event at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre finishes on Sunday.
