The New Zealand Transport Agency is about to start work at Oakleigh to improve the road surface and safety on State Highway One.
The work to fix and resurface the 2.5km of road between Oakleigh Rise and Oakleigh River Bridge will start today, weather permitting.
The repairs will also allow the introduction of safety improvements planned for a 10km stretch of the highway between Toetoe and Springfield Rds, NZTA System Manager Steve Mutton said.
When completed, there will be a 50cmwide centre line marked with yellow no-passing lines on both sides, flexible safety posts with raised reflectors and rumble strips.
Safety improvements along the entire 10km are expected to be completed by June.
In the five years between 2012-2016, head-on crashes accounted for seven (50 per cent) of 14 deaths and serious injuries on this stretch of road.
In November 2017, three people died and one was seriously injured in a crash at Oakleigh when a vehicle crossed the centre line.
The Oakleigh improvements will be carried out in three stages, starting at the northern end near Oakleigh Rise, and is expected to be finished by Easter, weather permitting.
Work will take place at night and temporary speed limits will be in place during the day.
