You have a prop, a line of dialogue, and only 48 hours to incorporate that into a piece of theatre.
It was called the 48 Hour Drama Competition and it was Whangarei woman Georgia-May Pope's favourite part of Northland Youth Theatre (NYT). But 2012 was the first and only year it happened - until now.
This year the competition will return under the name Dare to Devise and Ms Pope is one of the organisers.
"It is what really got me involved in theatre when I was younger. It was one of the first performances I put on outside of school. I just remember it being so much fun to have that excitement to have a piece ready by the end of 48 hours," said Ms Pope.
The idea to bring it back came mid-last year when NYT manager Hayley Clark started asking people involved in NYT what their strongest memories were and Ms Pope said it was the 48 Hour Drama Competition, which was organised by Damian Pullen.
Mr Pullen said the competition was modelled from the 48Hours film competition where teams are given a line of dialogue and a prop but, instead of using those elements in a film, they had to use them in a live performance.
"For teenagers it's all about being together in a big group and staying up late. It's always cool to see what they come up with. They really surprise us," he said.
The event runs from Friday, June 15, to Sunday, June 17.
On the Friday each team leader will receive a text which will include random elements - such as props and a line of dialogue - which must be used in the performance.
On the Sunday at 5pm teams will perform their piece at Forum North.
Ms Clark said teams can be made up of students from Year 10 to Year 13 and can be a mix of people from different schools. She said there was also an opportunity for students to earn NCEA credits.
"It's very accessible. We're not putting a fee on it for anyone to be involved. Teenagers have after-school activities, jobs, school, there's a lot of pressure on them time-wise and to do something that's mad, sleep-deprived and a crazy fun weekend is something to look forward to."
