Free snorkelling day

The Experiencing Marine Reserves programme is hosting a free Community Guided Snorkel Day at Maitai Bay on January 18 from 10am to 4pm in partnership with the Department of Conservation, Far North Surf Rescue and funded by Foundation North.

The event will include guided snorkel tours around the waters of Maitai Bay, which are protected under a no-take rahui, imposed by local iwi and hapu on December 20 to prevent fishing in the area to allow marine life to recover.

Properties free to visit

Heritage New Zealand has responded to huge public demand by declaring that all its staffed Northland properties will again be open free of charge on Waitangi Day. The full list of properties is Clendon House, the Kerikeri Stone Store, Kemp House, Mangungu Mission, Pompallier Mission and Printery and Te Waimate Mission House in Northland. Fleeing teen Tasered

A 19-year-old Kaikohe man booked himself a court appointment when he allegedly tried to flee from police. Sergeant Dylan Robinson said officers were called to a Kaikohe house about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

When police arrived, a man tried to run away but was confronted by an officer who used pepper spray to no effect. A second officer then Tasered the man after he tried to hit officers. He was charged with assault, resisting arrest and assaulting police.
