Girls raise cash
The 2017 House Tour organised by the Girls' Club raised more than $30,000 for North Haven Hospice.
It was the fifth such biennial event held by the group of Whangarei women who ask people to open their stylish homes to the paying public over a weekend,
This year's effort, with the open homes being shown on November 11 and 12, was the biggest so far, with 630 tickets sold.
The Girls' Club has raised more than $130,000 for the hospice since 2009.
Lucky Lotto winners
Buy a house, travel to Europe, pay off your student loan - there's a lot you can do with half a million dollars and two Lotto winners will have that luxury when they claim their First Division prize. Lotto players from Hamilton and Hokitika won $500,000 in Saturday's Lotto First Division draw, with the winning tickets sold at Grey Street Supermarket in Hamilton and Hokitika New World. Twenty-six Lotto players from around the country - but none from Northland - celebrated after each winning $19,029 with Lotto Second Division. A Strike Four player from Ashburton will also have a little more cash to splash after winning $300,000. No one struck the Powerball, so the jackpot has grown to $38 million. The winning numbers were 11, 12, 20, 28, 31, 36 and the bonus was 34, Powerball 02 and Strike 31, 28, 36 and 11.
Fine for window washer
A Whangarei man nabbed window washing will now have to find some other way to pay off a $150 instant fine. Officers spotted the Raumanga man at the intersection of SH1 and Rewarewa about 4.30pm yesterday. He was issued with a fine and told to leave the intersection.
Gas leak possible
Firefighters and police were called to reports of a gas leak between the dog park and bridge Te Maatau a Pohe in Whangarei yesterday. The report to police included "bubbling" coming from the ground. Firefighters at the scene were using gas detection equipment but workers on the nearby bridge had not smelt anything.
