If you have a friend who claims to be a genius, now is the time to put them to the test.
Mensa - the society where you have to have exceptional intelligence to join - is offering a free IQ test to all Northlanders who believe they have what it takes to be a member.
New Zealand's most intellectual citizens - Mensa members prefer to be called Mensans rather than geniuses - are hoping to recruit some new minds from Northland at Mensa's AGM in Whangarei at the end of this month.
To gain membership in this elite society, you must attain an IQ level in the top 2 per cent of the population - approximately 130 and above.
Only 11 Northlanders have earned the honour of becoming a Mensa New Zealand member, but it is expected there are many more geniuses out there.
If you're up for the challenge, Mensa will give free IQ tests on October 28, from 2.30pm at the Grand Hotel. When 30 Mensa New Zealand members head to Whangarei, their weekend will include an assortment of conversation and "nerdy and strategic games" said Mensa NZ chair and PR co-ordinator, Muzz Trickett.
Mr Trickett has been a member of Mensa NZ since he sat the IQ test at Victoria University in Wellington in the 80s. However, he didn't attend university, much like many other members of the society. During school he was often shifted between classes and was "told he would do better if he applied himself".
He said Mensa NZ is "one of those things that's really great to be a part of. You get to know people from all walks of life".
Mensans range from "high-school dropouts to people with multiple doctorates. As far as occupations, the range is staggering".
For all we know, there could be geniuses amongst us. To find out more visit www.mensa.org.nz.
