A 17-year-old has been arrested in relation to this week's spate of break-ins in Kawakawa.
But it's not over yet for the Bay of Islands town with one more business - the sushi shop - targeted in the early hours of Friday morning.
In the latest burglary, as in most of the earlier incidents, only the till was taken. When it was found to be empty it was dumped nearby. Considerable damage was done to the premises.
A scene of crime officer spent Friday morning at the shop collecting forensic evidence.
Kawakawa police Community Constable Roger Dephoff said a 17-year-old, who was identified through CCTV footage and local knowledge, was arrested on Wednesday.
He had admitted taking part in two break-ins in the early hours of Wednesday morning, as well as a burglary at the United Kawakawa Rugby Club and breaking in to a car in July.
He was charged with three counts of burglary and one of theft from a car.
Mr Dephoff said police were still looking for the youth they believed was the main offender.
As of yesterday morning there had been six break-ins this week. On Sunday night/early Monday a week-old electronic till was taken from the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway gift shop. The till, which was empty, was later found dumped in a nearby park.
Early on Wednesday Central Butchery, Elaine's Kitchen, the VIP Superette and a car were broken into. Items taken included a till drawer with a small amount of cash, an iPad, a knife and a packet of organic sanitary pads. An attempt was also made to enter a dental laboratory.
The break-in at the superette was not reported at the time.
Kylie Oldham, manager at Central Butchery, welcomed the arrest and said it showed the value of investing in security equipment. The shop owners had recently upgraded their CCTV cameras and installed extra lighting.
The Advocate understands the arrested youth is not from Kawakawa but had been placed there from another town in the Mid North. He has now been bailed elsewhere.
