A High Court judge will decide if and how much compensation should be paid to a Northland business that was wrongfully excluded from a cycleway tender process.
Kaikohe-based Rintoul Group is seeking $500,000-plus in compensation from the Far North District Council which excluded the company from a tender to build four sections of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. The High Court last month ruled the exclusion was wrong and gave both parties 15 working days from May 29 to agree on the sum of compensation. Company owner Ken Rintoul yesterday said an agreement has not been reached and the date for a hearing on quantum would be set by the High Court in Auckland.

Heritage Northland is targeting six existing signs around the Waimate North area for upgrading, as part of a new project to improve historic interpretation signage at key places. The original signage was erected by the Kaikohe Rotary Club some years ago, Kerikeri resident and spokesman Grainger Brown said, and were becoming "rather worn."
"Heritage Northland approached the Rotary Club to see if they'd be happy for us to make some new ones. They were delighted, and gave a generous donation towards the project," he said. "Initially we plan to put up six signs, and if the project goes well more may be added in Northland. One of the signs will point to Arthur's Stone, a 2.1mbasalt column, which is also New Zealand's first traffic accident memorial and listed as a Category 1 historic place by Heritage New Zealand, near Waimate North."
