Wear white and make your way to Whangarei' s Mair Park this Saturday to celebrate Holi, the Indian festival of colours.
The Northland Indian Association and Northland Polytechnic are hosting the free event and have urged everyone irrespective of their age, race, religion, culture or creed to join the celebration.
Holi traditionally heralds the arrival of spring in India and celebrates life through the use of colours.
The festival signifies the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, laugh and play, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships.
Smearing of powder paint is the main event and it's recommended people wear white and bring a towel to cover car seats on their ride back home.
It will be a strictly smoke and alcohol free event and food will be available to buy.
"Holi is a day to forget your worries and connect with family and friends. Come join us to enjoy traditional Indian games, cultural performances and festive Holi delicacies," the hosts said.
The event will be from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Holi is also celebrated in India as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.
On this day people come together to throw colours, enjoy delicacies and dance to music irrespective of their religious and ethnic back grounds. The intermingling of all colours denotes the unity of all human kind at the festival of Holi.
