Paper Works Exhibition by Linda Sabbage
January 18-31
Yvonne Rust Gallery,
The Quarry Arts Centre
An exhibition by artist Linda Sabbage has opened at Yvonne Rust Gallery in the Quarry Arts Centre, Whangarei.
Called Paper Works, it is an exploration of images, found and liberated objects, natural materials, emotional and intellectual experiences gathered while Sabbage was living in Europe, but with a surprisingly strong aesthetic relationship to living in New Zealand.
"I love paper. The material is flexible, alternative, and lends itself so easily to all the art making processes - drawing, collage, painting, design and construction," Sabbage said.
"I have played with these processes and this exhibition is representative of this play."
Sabbage was born in the United Kingdom. Her family moved to New Zealand and she attended Wellington East Girls' College, where she gained a scholarship to Elam School of Fine Arts. She later attended the University of Auckland for a BA.
From the 1980s, Sabbage has had works in private and public collections in New Zealand, Australia, UK and Spain.
"Throughout the years I have been influenced by many artists and I acknowledge their influence in my work; Leonardo Da Vinci, Picasso, Lucian Freud, Robert Ellis, Colin McCahon, Christine Hellyar, Terence Handscombe and many more."
