A man has died in a single-car crash in Ahipara, south east of Kaitaia after he was ejected from the car and the vehicle landed on top of him, police said.

According to police 42-year-old Cassius John Smith, from Whangarei, died when he lost control of his car at Pukepoto shortly before 5pm on Thursday. Police said Mr Smith was thrown from the vehicle, which then landed on top of him.

The car had travelled "well off the road" near the bridge east of Brass Rd, coming to rest in a paddock, a spokeswoman said. A St John ambulance and two fire crews attended but Mr Smith died at the scene. The Serious Crash unit is investigating.
