Police have confirmed two people have died after a helicopter crashed into a Northland forest.

Emergency services were called just after 2pm today, after a helicopter was reported overdue and its emergency beacon had been activated.

The bodies of two people have been located in the Glenbervie Forest, north of Whangarei.

At this stage it is not known what the helicopter was doing at the time of the crash and police are now working to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.
