More than 100 people gathered at NorthTec's Apprentice Restaurant on Saturday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Indian independence.
The evening started with the Indian and New Zealand national anthems before chief guest, Whangarei MP Dr Shane Reti, welcomed the guests and congratulated the world's largest democracy on its Independence Day celebrations.
It was more a meet-and-greet occasion rather than a formal Indian musical and food fest.
Ideas were exchanged on what activities the organisers, Northland Indian Association, could hold in future to bring together its members and other who wished to join.
Northern Advocate reporter Imran Ali was invited and took photos.
