Kerikeri Kindergarten kids have had a lesson in the art of busking and raised more than $150 in half an hour.

Acting head teacher, Jo Johanson, said dressing the children in traditional piupiu for the public performance was to celebrate Matariki and the main objective was to raise funds for a planned "rainforest" within the kindergarten. "We want to have ferns and misting hoses within the rainforest and even a small river for children to explore."

The youngsters took to the main street of the town to perform and raise money.

They also participated in a wheel-a-thon last Sunday where $600 was raised for the rainforest cause.

Ms Johanson said they were near the targeted $1000 in their fundraising.
