Removal of toxic chemicals from a caravan housing a working methamphetamine lab was being carried out by a specialist team of scientists yesterday.
Police were alerted to the clandestine lab on Monday afternoon and put the rural Moerewa property under guard overnight.
Experts examined the scene and removed the chemicals and equipment yesterday.
Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said an initial assessment indicated the caravan was being used as an operable methamphetamine laboratory.
"We found what we believe to be chemicals and equipment used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
"The size of the lab appears on the small scale and we're awaiting analysis to confirm the contents and the quantities of chemicals," Mr Burke said.
Police had not yet made any arrests.
The lab is not thought to be linked to the record meth bust in Kaitaia earlier this month.
