A driver fleeing from police after officers tried to stop the vehicle ended up crashing in a Whangarei suburb.

The drama began when officers noticed a car being driven at speed along Cameron St, about 12.22pm on Wednesday.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver continued and a pursuit began.

The car was driven to Whareora Rd in Tikipunga, where it crashed. The driver and his passenger, who were not injured, were arrested at the scene. The passenger was also dealt with on an unrelated matter.

The 24-year-old driver, Wayne Kaka, is facing charges of reckless driving, failing to stop and driving while suspended.

He appeared in the Whangarei District Court and was remanded in custody until Wednesday next week.
