A logging truck crash in the Bay of Islands this morning was caused by a medical condition.

Residents on Koropewa Rd, Waipapa, called emergency services about 3.40am when the truck veered off the road and crashed into a garden.

The driver, a 57-year-old man, could not be revived.

It is understood he had a heart condition.

Police were still at the scene this morning waiting for a specialist tow truck from Whangarei.

The police serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units were alerted early this morning but stood down once it was clear the crash was due to a medical event.
