A review is under way by the Rugby League Northland board after several Far North rugby league clubs allegedly announced their intent on splitting from the RLN and New Zealand Rugby League jurisdiction.
Citing their reasons for a split to the Northland Age earlier this week, a move looked likely after frustration had been established by clubs concerning a general feeling of being left out from the power base in Whangarei and the decision-making department.
Another contributing factor was that eligibility to play in the Premiership dictates clubs needed to field four junior teams.
"We hope it doesn't go that way," Rugby League Northland general manager Alex Smits said.
The proposed competition could still be run under the RLN and NZRL umbrellas, but might operate in relative autonomy.
The concept is said to be the brainchild of Hone Harawira, who said he was approached by delegates from the Far North teams dissatisfied with the current set-up.
"We [Far North teams such as Muriwhenua Falcons] travel five hours to play. Most of the Whangarei teams live within 20 minutes of each other. The travel is still the issue. We want a better deal for our clubs and our kids," Harawira said.
Smits said clubs would be consulted and a verdict on the matter would be reached by the end of October.
