A trail of diesel on Ngunguru Rd heading towards Whangarei is causing traffic chaos this morning with at least two crashes reported to police.
The spill was noticed about 8am today and shortly after that two vehicles went off both sides of the road. Tow trucks are on their way to pull the vehicles out of the ditch.
Police have confirmed closer to Ngunguru the diesel is on both sides of the road.
Police are advising drivers to take care and drive slowly. The Whangarei District Council has been notified as well.
UPDATE 8.36am: There have been at least four vehicle crashes reported to police now. No one has been injured.
UPDATE 8.52am: Police say there is diesel on the road from Ngunguru towards Tutukaka. Care is needed by drivers.
UPDATE 10.30am: Contractors have put "kitty litter" on the worst of the diesel spills but police are still urging drivers to take care and slow down on corners - especially the corner known as Murphy's Corner, just east of Ngunguru Ford Rd.
