Two statues at the Whangarei Tibetan Buddhist Centre were vandalised.

Police said a bang was heard from the centre at 11am on Sunday. Someone went outside and found two statues damaged and the rear window of a car smashed.

The vandalism occurred while a Buddhist monk was talking about karma inside the centre's Stupa.

A centre spokesman said a young man and woman entered the property while a monk, Geshe la, was teaching the Sunday class. They walked up the hill behind the house and smashed two concrete statues. They then smashed the rear windscreen of a car.

"Geshe la taught ... on the topic of Karma," the spokesman said on Facebook.

"We do not wish these young people any negativity and make prayers for their quick realisation of potential suffering that arises from non-virtuous behaviour."
