A patched gang member lead police on a 40-minute pursuit into the hills of Northland and was finally arrested when he fell off his motorbike after hitting a police car in a rest area.
Police said the man riding a Harley Davidson motorbike was spotted near Ohaewai on Friday about 7.20pm and allegedly failed to stop for police.
The 34-year-old Whangarei man accelerated away on State Highway 1.
During the pursuit, which reached speeds of up to 150km/h, a police vehicle got in front of the bike rider to warn oncoming traffic.
The rider was finally stopped when he pulled into a rest area at the summit of the Mangamuka Gorge, 52km north west of Ohaewai. But as he tried to move off again he struck a police vehicle, fell from his bike and was arrested.
He appeared in the Kaikohe District Court on Saturday on charges of failing to stop third or subsequent, reckless driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop and ascertain injury after a crash.
