Whangarei district residents who want to vote in the Whangarei District Council's Harbour Board Building referendum have just over a week to make sure they are able to have their say.
Time is running out for Whangarei electors to enrol or update their enrolment details to vote in the referendum, with the electoral roll for the referendum closing on April 9.
Registrar of Electors for Northland, Whangarei and Te Tai Tokerau electorates Deborah Darton said all eligible electors will need to be correctly enrolled by that date to be able to vote in the referendum.
"Eligible electors can enrol or update their details at any PostShop, or can get an enrolment form by calling 0800 36 76 56, by freetexting your name and address to 3676, or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website accessible at www.elections.org.nz," Ms Darton said.
She said voting papers for the referendum will be sent to all registered electors on the electoral roll from May 15.
"Only those people who are correctly enrolled will receive voting papers and be able to vote in the referendum.
"This means it is really important that all eligible electors enrol and that all registered electors check to see that their enrolment details are up to date," she said.
"Local electors can check their enrolment status at the elections website or by checking the rolls at any PostShop, courthouse or public library."
Ms Darton said because the details of people who are on the unpublished roll are kept confidential, electors on this roll should contact Dale Ofsoske, the Electoral Officer at Whangarei District Council, to get information on how to apply to cast a special vote.
Currently there are 56,916 Northland, Whangarei and Te Tai Tokerau electors enrolled to vote in the referendum.
The binding referendum to determine whether the Harbourside or Hundertwasser and Wairau Maori Art Centre proposals are chosen for the building, or if it will be demolished, will be held on June5.
