Motorists travelling through Whangarei can expect disruptions from today with work starting on the next stage of improvements on State Highway 1 through the city.
Work was to begin with the upgrading of Western Hills Dr/SH1 from Wilson Ave to Fourth Ave.
Contractors will start the first stage of the works with the closure of the intersection between Western Hills Drive and Wilson Ave West.
The work includes widening the highway, upgrading footpaths and relocating utilities. The transport agency is also working with the WDC to construct a new link road between Fourth Ave and Kauika Rd.
"We're excited to start this year getting another of the improvement projects in Whangarei under way - it means we can deliver on what we've promised and provide the community safer and easier access through the city," the transport agency's highway manager, Brett Gliddon, said.
In addition to the closure of the Wilson Ave West intersection next week, a number of changes will affect how people get around the area.
These include:
- From March 1, the link road between Fourth Ave and Kauika Rd will be opened.
- From March 9 to March 22, Fourth Ave will be closed for construction work.
- From March 29, Fourth Ave will become a left in/left out turn only on to Western Hills Drive/SH1.
The works are due to be completed at the end of the year.
