Ask a New Zealander what is this country's rarest bird and you are likely to get an assortment of answers - the kiwi, the kakapo, the takahe, etc.
The correct answer is the New Zealand fairy tern, the tara-iti, and it is narrowly leading the quest to be named Forest and Bird's Seabird of the Year.
Only 40 of these terns are known to exist - all in Northland - meaning it is possibly the most endangered bird in the world.
To make Kiwis aware of the fairy tern, the Northern Branch of Forest and Bird and the New Zealand Fairy Tern Charitable Trust is promoting "our tern" as Forest and Bird's Seabird of the Year.
The bird was seventh place in last year's top 10 and local conservationists and supporters are aiming for it to be No1 in 2014. Northland conservationist Wade Doak, QSM, is championing the bird with the slogan "It's Our Tern". Locals are invited to join Northland Forest and Bird in promoting it.
The vote for Seabird of the Year runs until 6pm on November 24. To vote, go to www.seabirdoftheyear.org.nz
