Whangarei resident Dawn Wilkinson may not have her sight but she still remembers the words to her favourite song, Moon River.
"I can't see," she said, "but I still have all the words up in my head."
Mrs Wilkinson is one of 30 members of the Jane Mander Glee Club, who are practising for the Kamo rest home and retirement village's first public show on Sunday.
She and her husband joined the group over a year ago.
"Everybody's so happy here when they're singing," she said. "It's nice to know that our singing can bring enjoyment."
The Glee Club was formed two years ago after Jane Mander Retirement Village co-ordinator Christien Oberholster placed a small ad to see if there was any interest.
The group started with 11 people and has since grown to include about 30 singers, all from the village.
Ms Oberholster, who directs the group, said they sang the old songs "that everyone knows".
"Our youngest is closer to 80, and our oldest person is about 96," she said.
The group had taken inspiration from the 2007 documentary Young @ Heart, which follows a group of American senior citizens as they perform songs by Jimi Hendrix and Coldplay among others.
"[Our glee club] reminds me of that group," Ms Oberholster said.
The club numbers had fallen slightly after two members passed away in the last year, but the group is looking forward to performing in public.
"We would really like for the older community to come along," Ms Oberholster said. The Glee Club will also be joined by Auckland quartet MOLTO for the concert on Sunday at Jane Mander.
