Strong winds are expected for Northland today with gusts expected to reach up to 120kmh in exposed places.
The MetService says a strong cold south to southwest flow has spread over the country and is expected to slowly ease late afternoon and this evening.
Gales are affecting eastern coasts of both Islands, also central New Zealand and the upper North Island.
The strongest winds are likely about higher parts of Banks Peninsula, in Wellington, about the coasts of Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, and also over Auckland and Northland. In all these areas, severe gales are possible in exposed places with gusts reaching 120kmh. These winds should peak late morning to early afternoon about central New Zealand and the upper North Island.
