An inmate who took part in a vicious attack on a fellow prisoner at Ngawha Prison assaulted another prisoner and guards while serving time at Rimutaka Prison, a jury has been told.
Arthur Briggs, 30, is on trial in the Wellington District Court with two others on charges of attacking and knocking unconscious a Rimutaka prisoner who they thought had "narked" to prison guards.
The Crown told a jury of four women and eight men yesterday that Briggs, Regan Cross and Elise Tuese were involved in the pack attack on fellow inmate Anton Matenga two years ago.
Briggs has denied a charge of injuring with intend to cause grievous bodily harm but has pleaded guilty to four charges relating to assaults against prison guards.
Two other prisoners had earlier pleaded guilty to related charges.
The Crown alleged a prison officer received a round house kick on his head before Briggs continued his attack on the prisoner and kicked him unconscious while he lay on the floor.
Crown prosecutor Geraldine Kelly told the jury that in 2008, Briggs was involved in the beating of Matthew Te Hira inside Ngawha Prison. However, she said just because Briggs was convicted of the beating at Ngawha didn't mean he was guilty of the Rimutaka incident.
Briggs and co-offenders Les Tasos Connelly, Stefan Hoeer and Eru Te Whata were convicted after a jury trial in the High Court at Whangarei and sentenced to between nine and 10 years' in jail for bashing Mr Te Hira.
The orchestrator of the attack and Black Power member, Jonothon Poutai, was also convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of six years and two months.
A sock filled with batteries was allegedly used in that attack.
