Pleading innocence didn't work for former Northland captain Jared Payne who was red-carded after just four minutes for a crunching tackle on Alex Goode, watching helplessly as his Ulster side lost 17-15 to Saracens.

Payne was sent off for the tackle on Saracens' Goode as he collected the ball in mid-air in their European Cup clash.

Goode was stretchered off while Payne pleaded that he had been keeping his eye on the ball and had not targeted the opposition player.
