Octagon Theatre's Christmas production, With a Smile and a Song takes you on a musical journey around the world.
From New York, to London, to the South Pacific, and little old New Zealand, the show includes jingles you could sing along to, such as the Gumboot song, Chesdale Cheese and We don't know how lucky we are.
The experienced cast, including long-time Octagon performer Trish Fowke, president Carol Freebairn, and Bill Finn, performed themed group songs (with fantastic costumes), solo performances and comedy skits.
While the songs are probably targeted at older audiences, the comedy skits were hilarious for all, including my date for the evening, my 12-year-old brother.
While all the solo performances were wonderful, two were particularly memorable, Didi Muncastor-Wright performing Cabaret, and young, solo first-timer Brad Lang, with his deep, booming voice. A special mention must also be made of the "Tree", whose back split open on stage. In fact, the entire cast in the Queen skit did an excellent job - I had sore cheeks after that.
The show is directed by Ms Freebairn, who says: "It's a pleasure to have so many familiar faces in the cast once again. Without changing too much the style of our well- known, and well requested, Christmas show, I have included this time a lot of new songs that I am sure will delight everyone."
Delightful they were. By the second half the crowd was swaying and singing along.
The final collection of Christmas songs, combined with the Christmas-style dinner followed by Christmas pud, really got me into the spirit.
I'd highly recommend getting three-course dinner and show ticket for $39. A ticket for just the show is $22.
