Blomfield Special School's new transition building is a "happy" building that students love.
The transition building is for students aged 16 to 21 to assist with the transition from school to the wider community.
"A transition building needs to treat the people using it like adults as much as possible," principal Sally Wilkinson said.
"It needs to give them a good amount of independence in what they can do." She said the new building aimed to teach important life skills, such as cooking and fitness.
"It's a base from which they can do work experience, and access the community."
The $1.3 million building is located in the middle of the school car park at 31 Maunu Road. Before that, students were in "second-rate accommodation."
At the opening ceremony, Board of Trustees chairman Steve Watene praised the new building and exhibits.
He said architects had directly consulted with students on a concept.
"They asked everyone who was going to use it their ideas. It's one of a kind ... a very happy building."
Mrs Wilkinson said the students' reactions had been positive.
"They love it. I think the students are finally getting the accommodation they deserve."
