The main highway at the southern end of Whangarei will be closed at times over the weekend while a stretch of road damaged by a broken storm water pipe is repaired.
NZ Transport Agency said contractors need to close parts, or all, of State Highway One at the southern entrance to Whangarei on Saturday and Sunday while the work is done.
NZTA senior delivery manager for Northland, Jacqui Hori-Hoult said SH1 highway has settled around the pipe just south of the SH1/Murdoch Cres intersection, damaging the road.
Ms Hori-Hoult said the northbound lane of the SH1 will be closed from 5pm tomorrow for about two hours while preliminary work is undertaken. During this closure, a manual traffic control system will be in place to divert northbound traffic into the southbound lane.
Repairs to the highway will start at 6am on Sunday when northbound traffic will again be diverted by a manual traffic control system into the southbound lane.
When traffic volumes increase during Sunday, all SH1 southbound traffic will be diverted along Mount Pleasant Rd, Arcus St and Southend Ave.
"We ask all road users to be patient along this section of SH1 while we complete the repairs and restore this section of the highway to a safe condition," Ms Hori-Hoult said.
"It is a live work site and people need to take care for the safety of themselves and their passengers and our contractors."
The work, which is weather dependent, should be completed by 6am next Monday morning ahead of peak traffic movements.
