A young teenage girl phoned police and remained calm as she described suspected burglars attempting to break into a Kamo home.
She remained on the phone until officers arrived in Magnolia Ave, Kamo, shortly after 2.15pm yesterday.
Police have praised her actions, which led to the arrest of three boys aged 14 to 15 in a nearby street.
Whangarei police Sergeant Daniel Cleaver said the young girl did everything right and managed to describe the events to a police communications call-taker as they unfolded.
"She has done the right thing and remained calm.
"Well done to her. " Mr Cleaver said.
"She did an outstanding job getting a description of one of the males."
Mr Cleaver said the boys had unsuccessfully tried to force their way through the downstairs window of a home.
When the boys were stopped on Fairway Dr and spoken to by police it was found they allegedly had property taken from a nearby house.
The boys were taken to Whangarei police station. Mr Cleaver said they could face burglary-related charges which would see them referred to the police Youth Aid section.
It is the first week of the school holidays and police have issued a clear warning for parents: "Know where your kids are and know what they are doing."
