Police have launched a homicide inquiry following the death of a one-year-old Whangarei boy.
Whangarei police said the baby was taken to Whangarei Hospital about 10am yesterday and was found to have significant head injuries.
In the early afternoon he was airlifted to Auckland Starship Hospital.
Just before 11pm last night the baby died.
A post mortem is being carried out today to determine the cause of death.
About 25 Police staff are carrying out inquiries to establish what led to the baby's death.
The investigation involves a forensic examination of an address of interest in Carlton Crescent in Kamo.
Police are speaking to the family of the baby and are also carrying out area inquiries in the neighbourhood around this address.
