The latest MetService forecast is warning southwest gales in Northland and Auckland today could make driving conditions hazardous and could damage unsecured structures, trees and powerlines.
The southerlies and snow are expected to ease Wednesday morning.
A strong, bitterly cold southerly flow is affecting the country. Watches and Warnings for heavy snow are in force for the far south of the South Island, the central North Island high country and the higher ground of Wellington and Wairarapa.
The snow could cause major disruption to transport and motorists are advised to proceed with caution.
Frosts overnight could also make driving conditions hazardous, even in areas not directly affected by snow.
